Emme’s Top Tips for Oily Skin
by Emily Burg on July 11, 2024
Do you find yourself constantly battling oily skin? You're not alone – even I deal with it! Although managing oily skin can be challenging, you can achieve a balanced, radiant complexion with the right approach! So, here are some tips to help curb oil production and keep your skin looking its best:
1. Embrace Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a game-changer for oily skin. Unlike AHAs, which are water-soluble, salicylic acid is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) and oil-soluble. This means it binds to oil molecules and clears them out of pores clogged with oil, debris, and dead skin. The result? A more balanced complexion. You can find salicylic acid in our Purifying Serum, a favorite among our clients with particularly oily skin.
2. Don't Skip Moisturizer
It's a common misconception that oily skin doesn't need moisturizer. In reality, if your skin is too dry, it can overcompensate by producing even more oil. So, keeping your skin hydrated is crucial. We offer three fantastic moisturizers that work beautifully with oily skin: Pure Light Lotion, HydraLuxe Cream, and Barrier Balance. Not sure which one is right for you? Our free online consultation can help you decide!
3. Incorporate Sulfur into Your Routine
Sulfur is another fantastic ingredient for managing oily skin. This naturally occurring mineral effectively kills acne bacteria, draws out oils and impurities, reduces inflammation, and decongests pores. It works quickly, too – our Sulfur Refining Mask only needs to be left on for three minutes to see results.
4. Consider Omega-3 Supplements
Adding oil to your routine when you already have oily skin might seem counterintuitive, but omega-3 oils can actually help. They work to thin out your natural oils, which can sometimes become sticky like glue on your skin and clog your pores. I personally love Nordic Naturals omega-3 supplements, but it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before starting any new supplement.
Additional Tips for Managing Oily Skin
While the above tips are fantastic for controlling oil production, here are a few more pointers to keep your skin happy and healthy:
- Gentle Cleansing: Use a gentle, foaming cleanser twice a day to remove excess oil without stripping your skin.
- Regular Exfoliation: Exfoliate 2-3 times a week to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. Our Skin Smoothing Polish is gentle enough to be used daily!
- Matte Finish Sunscreen and Makeup: To keep your skin looking fresh and shine-free throughout the day, opt for products that offer a matte finish. Our Tinted Mineral SPF has a universally flattering tint with a matte finish that’s perfect for everyday sun protection. Plus, it doubles as a replacement for primer before makeup application (or even in place of your makeup!). Mattifying makeup products, such as foundations and powders, can also help keep excess oil at bay… just be sure to choose makeup products that are acne-safe!
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps to flush out toxins and keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.
- Avoid Touching Your Face: Avoid touching your face throughout the day to prevent transferring oil, dirt, and bacteria.
- Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get enough sleep to help regulate your body's oil production.
- Manage Stress: High stress levels can trigger more oil production, so practice stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation, or exercise.
Every skin type is unique, and what works for one person might not work for another. It may take some trial and error to find the perfect routine for your oily skin, but don't get discouraged. With the right products and habits, you can achieve a healthy, glowing complexion.
And lastly, if you have been blessed with oily skin like me, even though it can feel like a nuisance (like how I shine bright like a diamond in all my pictures…like blindingly bright! LOL!), it does have its benefits such as slowing the aging process, and we tend to be less prone to sensitivity and have more resilient skin! So, embrace that natural glow!
