8 Dark Horse Ingredients in Your Face Masks

by The Emme Diane Team on October 28, 2021

The right facial masks can make a visible difference in the efficacy of our skincare routines, and that's due to a variety of things, one big reason being: the ingredients!

When reading the ingredients for anything, all of the words can seem to blend together into one big square of text. We're here to share 8 unassuming ingredients and what they are doing to your skin during your face mask routine.

1. Allantoin

✔️ Restores ✔️ Hydrates ✔️ Soothes

Allantoin is a botanical compound found in a variety of plants, including wheat sprouts, chamomile, sugar beet, the tobacco plant, and more. Both acne-safe and non-toxic, it makes for an excellent ingredient in skincare.

Naturally gentle, Allantoin promotes collagen growth while also soothing the skin. It also helps aid in restoration and recovery, as well as hydration! Our Pumpkin Enzyme Mask and Cucumber Cooling Mask both contain Allantoin, so when you add them to your routine, you reap all of the benefits!

2. Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract

✔️ Anti-inflammatory ✔️ Hydrates ✔️ Nourishes

A fancy way to say "cucumber", Cucumis Sativus can be found in skincare products that aren't even advertised as "cucumber products". Why? It's great for the skin! Containing anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, and vitamins, Cucumis Sativus gives the skin an intense boost of hydration and nourishment.

Both our Pumpkin Enzyme Mask and Cucumber Cooling Mask contain Cucumis Sativus!

3. Glycerin

✔️ Hydrates ✔️ Softens

Glycerin is a natural compound found in vegetables and animals (note: we do not test on or use animal products at Emme Diane). This ingredient is familiar to many due to its wide variety of uses in skincare, food, medications, and more.

Glycerin is a humectant and emollient, meaning it helps draw moisture in and keep it there, relieving dryness and softening the skin. Glycerin can be found in our Pumpkin Enzyme Mask, Cucumber Cooling Mask, and Sulfur Refining Mask!

4. Panax Ginseng Root Extract

✔️ Diminishes Wrinkles ✔️ Stimulates Collagen ✔️ Reduces Redness

Ginseng Root comes from the roots of the herb, Ginseng. Ginseng has many benefits - in diet, medicinally, and in skincare. In skincare, Ginseng Root helps to balance the skin. It also diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while simultaneously stimulating collagen production and circulation. This all leaves your skin looking visibly firmer. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help keep redness under control for an all over youthful, even-toned appearance.

You'll find Panax Ginseng Root in our Pumpkin Enzyme Mask!

5. Kaolin

✔️ Purifies Pores ✔️ Absorbs Oil ✔️ Clears Skin

A gentle clay, Kaolin works wonders for all skin types, but especially those with oily skin. Sometimes known as China Clay, Kaolin purifies the pores by gently drawing out and absorbing excess sebum (oil)! This leads to smoother, clearer skin. Kaolin also leaves you visibly firmer, all without drying you out. It's a home run for those who struggle with oily skin and acne, but can benefit anyone!

6. Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Fruit

✔️ Exfoliates ✔️ Diminishes Wrinkles ✔️ Lightens Dark Spots

Cucurbita Pepo (or pumpkin) exfoliates your skin naturally. There's no need to rub or polish the skin yourself because the fruit does all of the work for you. How? It contains natural fruit enzymes! You can think of these enzymes like little Pac-Man. The enzymes gently munch at the top dead layer of your skin, giving you an instant glow. Also rich in beta-carotene, pumpkin diminishes wrinkles and lightens dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

7. Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

✔️ Hydrates ✔️ Boosts Cell Regeneration ✔️ Soothes

Thriving in the desert, Aloe Barbadensis (also known as Aloe Vera) excels at holding in water. This succulent is perfect for all skin types and offers a list of benefits.

Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, Aloe Barbadensis boosts moisture on the skin while also encouraging healthy cell regeneration. With that, it is anti-inflammatory and soothing, giving your skin a desirable boost of TLC.

You can find Aloe Barbadensis in our Cucumber Cooling Mask!

8. Bentonite

✔️ Detoxifies ✔️ Refines ✔️ Clears Skin

Found in lush volcanic ash, this clay is filled with rich minerals that benefit the skin.

Without getting too scientific, Bentonite contains negatively-charged molecules that actually bind to acne-causing bacteria and congestion, leaving your pores detoxified, refined, and ultimately resulting in clearer skin.

You can find Bentonite in our Sulfur Refining Mask!
