Retinol Do's and Don'ts

by Emily Linehan on March 24, 2022

Retinol is probably the most well-known and sought after ingredients in skincare, and for good reason.

Every single person can benefit from adding retinol to their skincare routine, regardless of skin type or skin concern. Not only is retinol considered the gold-standard when it comes to anti-aging, but it also helps to give you an even skin tone, minimizes the appearance of pores, fades acne scarring, and helps clear blemishes. So, whether your goal is clearer skin or anti-aging, retinol should be a part of your routine.

With that being said, there are some guidelines that should be followed when it comes to incorporating this powerful serum into your routine! Let's go over them.

DO: Allow for an acclimation period

Though retinol is an amazing ingredient, it does take some time for the skin to get used to its potency. Rushing into your relationship too quickly can result in dry or irritated skin. In order to avoid this, make sure you ease it into your routine. For our Pro-Retinol Serum, I recommend beginning every third night to acclimatize. Then, you can increase the frequency as the skin tolerates, to where you are applying nightly.

A standout in its league, this corrective retinol serum with a boost of skin-firming peptides combats the common signs of aging by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin dullness, but it doesn't stop there. Specially formulated for adult acne-prone skin, this targeted serum also helps to clear blemishes and fade acne scars, for a clear, even-toned, and youthful complexion.

DON'T: Apply retinol in the morning

Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, meaning you are more prone to sun damage. Because of that, I only recommend applying retinol in the evening.

DO: Be consistent with sunscreen

Because retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, it's imperative that you apply your sunscreen daily, all the time, but especially when retinol is a part of your skincare routine.

DON'T: Assume you cannot use retinol if you have sensitive skin

Because retinol is such a potent ingredient, many people believe that they cannot use it if they have sensitive skin. This is simply not true! Allowing room for an acclimation period is essential when it comes to retinol, regardless of skin sensitivity. Additionally, if you have really sensitive skin, there are ways we can acclimate the skin slower by buffering the retinol with your moisturizer or by timing the retinol on the skin for 15 minutes per night, then rinsing and finishing with the rest of your skincare routine.

When retinol is used correctly, any skin type can enjoy the benefits and results of this amazing ingredient!

DO: Remember to moisturize or hydrate

Moisturizing is always a vital part of a skincare routine, but it becomes that much more important when using a retinol serum. Because retinol can be drying, making sure you're always using a moisturizer or hydrator as directed is necessary.

DON'T: Use retinol when you are pregnant

When pregnant, it's important to take a look at all of the ingredients in your skincare to make sure that they are safe. Unfortunately, retinol should not be applied while you're expecting. However, that doesn't have to be a setback in the slightest!

Check-In with me and I can recommend pregnancy-safe alternatives that work for you. According to new reports, Retinol can be used while breastfeeding, however I always recommend consulting with a healthcare professional prior to resuming the use of Retinol.

DO: Be consistent and patient

Like any skincare ingredient, retinol isn't going to drastically change your skin overnight, so stick with it, apply it consistently as-directed, and have patience.

While many see a difference much sooner, visible improvements can be seen in 3 months and best results are achieved in 6-12 months.

DON'T: Use retinol before waxing or laser treatments

Retinol has exfoliating properties, so it's best to skip the retinol before and immediately after any facial waxing or laser treatments.

Also, be sure to let your esthetician or laser technician know if you have been using a retinol.

DO: Check-In with a professional!

You will see the best benefits from retinol (and all of the products in your skincare routine) when you have a professional in your corner. Make sure you have taken our free consultation to get your recommended products. Once you begin, Check-In with me regularly so we can touch base and make sure that you're on track to the skin of your dreams!
