When Should You Start Using Anti-Aging Products?
by Emily Linehan on May 19, 2022
Although anti-aging products used to be targeted towards middle aged women, I’ve found that more and more of my younger clients are actively looking for ways to combat the signs of aging as well. Preventative measures combined with incorporating proven anti-aging ingredients into your routine is a much easier option than trying to reverse the signs of aging. Lets dive into which ingredients to utilize and when to incorporate them into your routine!
Sunscreen
When to Start: Yesterday!
If you aren’t already wearing an SPF daily it’s crucial that you start immediately. Sunscreen protects your skin from the extreme damage that can occur from sun exposure, which not only results in sun spots or hyperpigmentation, but also breaks down collagen and elastin, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles and uneven pigment. If you’re wanting to combat the signs of aging, sunscreen is the best place to start, especially since sun damage doesn’t show up right away. Instead, the sun damage that occurred throughout your childhood and early adult years won’t appear until your 30’s.
Eye Treatments
When to Start: 18 Years Old
I recommend starting an eye treatment (like an eye cream or serum) at 18 or as early as possible. The delicate skin around the eyes is quick to show the signs of aging, and when it comes to fine lines and wrinkles, prevention really is the secret.
With that being said, whether you're 25 or 65, you will see visible benefits from an eye treatment, including reduced puffiness and dark circles, diminished fine lines and wrinkles, and more firmness around the eye. These effects all happen while simultaneously preventing future signs of aging!
Retinol
When to Start: Mid 20’s to Early 30’s
One of the best ways that you can promote more youthful skin is by adding a retinol, like our Pro-Retinol Serum, to your nightly skincare routine. Retinol increases the production of new collagen in the skin, which is essential for that supple firmness we associate with youth.
When the growth of collagen is stimulated, you'll see the skin become more firm over time, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Adding Retinol into your routine is typically recommended around age 25 or later as this is when elastin production begins to slow down.
Exfoliants
When to Start: Almost any age/ Early adulthood
As you age the skin starts to slow down its natural exfoliating process, which means old dead cells linger a bit longer than they should. This is why regular exfoliation is essential to any anti-aging skincare routine. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, resulting in more even-toned and radiant complexion. I recommend starting with a gentle exfoliant, such as our Skin Smoothing Polish, around early adulthood, or when you notice that your skin is no longer shedding old skin cells as quickly as it used to.
Peptides
When to Start: Mid 20’s to early 30’s
Peptides are scientifically proven to support the skin, making it appear more youthful! Our Firming Peptide Serum is formulated with two of the most powerful peptides: Acetyl Hexapeptide and Palmitoyl Pentapeptide. These peptides in combination soften fine lines, firm the skin, and stimulate new collagen growth.
I recommend adding a peptide to your skincare routine sometime during your mid 20’s to early 30’s as this is when collagen production naturally slows down. However, adding a peptide to your skincare routine will help your skin appear more youthful no matter where you're at. It will also help act preventatively to slow down the deepening of expression lines and wrinkles.
