Toners are commonly misunderstood, but are an essential part of your skincare. The purpose of a toner is to remove any trace impurities your cleanser or tap water may have left behind, correct and balance the pH of your skin, and impart targeted ingredients onto the skin.

For the purpose of toning after cleansing, it is best to use a cotton round and gently wipe the skin. However, we often recommend spraying a little Calm Down Toner directly onto your skin if it needs a little extra hydration midday, or even as an acne-safe makeup setting spray.

Toners and astringents are often thought of as the same thing, but they couldn’t be more different. Unlike astringent, toner tends to be an alcohol-free solution to add moisture and other active ingredients that contribute to healthier skin.

For the purpose of toning, you should always apply the toner with a cotton round or silken wipe in order to remove trace impurities from the skin. While your cleanser likely did a great job at removing impurities, the tap water used to wash the face contains harsh chemicals and minerals that can be drying and irritating to the skin. Wiping the skin removes this potential skin irritant. Also, the wiping action will remove any residual dead skin cells from the surface of the skin to reveal a fresher, brighter complexion.
